LIFE ON MARS – How will it end?

lifeonmarscast2You all know that I was rooting 100% for the US version of LIFE ON MARS to take hold and become the hit that it so desperately deserved to be.  This wasn’t a COUPLING disaster; it was an OFFICE kind of remake, and it should have found solid footing.  Sadly, that wasn’t the case, and we’ll see our final LIFE ON MARS starring Jason O’Mara air tomorrow night on ABC after an all new LOST.

Executive Producers Scott Rosenberg and Josh Appelbaum had a few minutes to chat with me about what’s to come, why they’re happy they got the wrap-up, and what they want to say to all the fans that stuck with the show!

I just finished watching last week’s episode for the second time, I can’t get enough!  Trying to get as much as possible before it sadly goes.
Josh:
Oh that’s great!

Scott:  That was a good one, wasn’t it?

It was so good, it’s a shame that not enough people were watching to experience it with me.  I guess the big question I have coming up on what is being called the series finale, what did you feel you had to change to wrap things up?
Josh:  We really, we always knew, in building what we thought at first was a season finale, there was always going to be a real culmination to it, and we were going to have some big reveals by the end of it.  The majority of the episode you are going to see on Wednesday, was what we had always planned.  It’s pretty much in the final act.  I would say the last 7 or 8 minutes of the show where it really takes a turn. There’s this great, sort of energized story that we kick off within Wednesday’s episode, there was no reason to change it because it totally fits into the themes of where the series was going, so it’s really just the last 7 or 8 minutes that change. TVx3 E022: What’s the Name of That Actor I’d Like to See Back on TV?

Do you have a favorite actor you’d like to see back on your TV? Well, that’s what listener Sam wanted to know. So, we set out to discuss those actors we haven’t seen much of recently, but would like too.

We started things off with some news about Bones, Chopping Block, In the Motherhood, Monk and Hulu.

Then after discussing this week’s topic, we moved on to our primetime wrap-up, where we talked about the Battlestar Galactica series finale, the last couple episodes of Dollhouse, The Amazing Race, Chuck, Lost, Life, The Office, and Party Down.

Next time we’ll talk about ratings. If you’ve got thoughts on the subject or have a topic suggestion for us, give our listener line a call at 213-985-3176, leave a comment below, or email us.

A chat with CUPID and his Doctor

CupidABC premieres the reboot of the Rob Thomas series CUPID (which first aired in 1998), tonight on ABC.  The story of a man named Trevor who the people of NY kind of think is crazy, because he thinks he’s CUPID.  The Cupid, the man tasked with matching 100 souls in true love before he’s able to get back to Mount Olympus.  He is required by law to see a shrink, which is where the lovely Claire McRae comes into the picture.  Burned by love in the past, she sees Trevor only as a crazy person who is imagining his need to play Cupid, and tries with all of her might to get him to realize it to.  Little does she know that it’s kind of obvious Cupid is just what she needs to believe in love again.

I had the great chance to talk with Cupid and Dr. McRae, portrayed in this version of the series with aplomb by Bobby Cannavale (THIRD WATCH, WILL & GRACE) and Sarah Paulson (STUDIO 60).  We talked about the stigma (or lack thereof) attached to a brand new version of the same old show, and why people should tune in and watch!

For starters, Bobby, I loved you in THE STATION AGENT.  One of my favorite movies!
Bobby: Oh thank you, that’s really nice!

And Sarah, I was a huge fan of your work on STUDIO 60!  I’m a huge fan of both of yours, so it’s exciting to see you together!
Bobby: Oh thank you!
Sarah: Thank you!

Can you guys talk for a minute about what drew you to these characters?
Sarah:
Go for it Bobby!

Bobby:  I was looking to do something that I thought was funny, oddly enough, grounded in some kind of reality.  Believe it or not, this show actually hit the mark for me.  I really wanted to find something that I would have very few limitations.  If the show were to go for a, that I’d have fun playing, that I wouldn’t get bored playing.  I thought this one really fit the bill.  The idea that this sort of no boundaries kind of guy, to be hooked in with this woman who has a different set of rules, and how they would affect each other, how that relationship would grow, learning about love, talking, and friendship really interested me.  And working with Sarah really interested me.  That still does.  Those things!  What about you Sarah? Dustin Milligan off 90210?

90210Them’s the rumors that are making their way through the blogisphere this morning – according to EW’s Michael Ausiello, Milligan’s contract option for Season 2 has not been picked up.  All signs point to him being moved from series regular to recurring guest star.  We all know how that worked out for Jessica Walter.  Apparently, when Rebecca Rand Kirshner Sinclair took over the reins, she intended to actually make a difference.  My only hope is that Milligan’s departure means less focus on Annie (I’m feeling like an end of season 2 departure for the girl from the MidWest wouldn’t be a terrible idea.  Look at how the early departure of Brenda Walsh helped the original), and more focus on Navid and Adrianna.

Your thoughts on the (not yet official, but probably pretty done deal) ouster of Millgan?

Breaking News: FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS get 2 season pickup!

It sounds like our dreams are coming true! Perennial critical darling and my favorite show currently on TV has been picked up for not just one but two new seasons! Much like this year, where the show ran on DirecTV first in the fall and is airing now on NBC, FNL will do the same for seasons 4 and 5.

Not much is known, storyline-wise but it sounds like Lyla (Minka Kelly, who is off to hang out in DC with Jason Dohring in BODY POLITIC) and Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) will be written out a la Jason Street and Smash Williams in Season 3!

What do you think? Excited as I am??

GREEK’s newest pledge, Jesse McCartney

jesse-mccartneyTonight’s all new GREEK is the first of 6 episodes with guest star Jesse McCartney as Andy, the blue blooded pledge that Evan is dying to have on his team at Omega Chi.  It sounds like Andy may not want all the pressure of being an OX, and may end up trying his hand at some Kappa Tau fraternization!

Jesse had a few minutes to chat the other day, and we talked about what to expect when he joins the ranks of our favorite Cypress Rhodes students!

I’ve seen the first episode, and I love how easily you fit in!
The cast made it really easy for me to jump in there and be a part of the show.

It’s almost like you had always been a background cast member, and they brought you on for a bigger role this year!  Why did you want to play this character?
ABC called me, and said, would you be interested?  I had seen a couple episodes, and I’d always thought the show was really, really good, and maybe sometimes overlooked by people.  I noticed that the acting, especially, the whole cast.  The characters were really great.  They sent me a couple scripts, and said, this is the character.  I really connected with it.  I thought it would be great.  I hadn’t really done comedy like this for a long period of time, over like an arc of 6 episodes.  I really wanted to sort of dive into it, and have fun with it.  Sort of have it be my first time playing a college student.  I think that is sort of appropriate given that I’d be graduating college, and most of my fans are in college now.  It really struck me as something fun.

That’s funny that you mention playing a college student.  One of the first scenes, we see you holding a beer, it’s like Oh my gosh, Jesse is playing more grown up, which suited you well!
Thank you!  Like I said, it was definitely a big step for me, in the acting world, too.  The overall look of it, people are hopefully seeing me in a different light than what they originally perceived.

My last question, what can we expect throughout your arc on the show?
A lot of dramedy.  The first couple of episodes, you see me sort of getting used to, adjusting to the college life as a freshman, and I’m very green to the whole fraternity thing.  And then, over the next few, I get a little cockier, a little more comfortable.  There’s a love triangle that gets interesting.  It’s everything you want.  That show does, for me at least, as an audience, as a viewer, everything you want a show to do.  The ups, the downs, makes you laughs, the strong drama that you get out of it, too.  It’s a really entertaining show, and I’m looking forward to hearing the fans’ reaction!

I think it’ll be a good reaction.  I’ve seen the first episode, and I look forward to more!
Thank you!

Spencer Grammer dishes on GREEK

spencer-grammer1GREEK returns tonight on ABC Family with an all new cycle of episodes.  The first episode back is big with the funny, and the dramatic, and is one of my favorites so far!  Casey is back from her internship in DC, and she’s holding onto some secrets from her summer.  Rusty is an active in the KT house, and he’s got some living space problems.  We find out quickly which sorority (ZBZ or IKI) Rebecca chose, and why, and there’s movement made in many different relationships and friendships as the first hour goes on.  Look for new recruit Jesse McCartney to cause some more problems between KT and OX, as well.

In celebration of the season premiere tonight, I spent some time talking with Casey Cartwright herself, the lovely Spencer Grammer, who is as excited about the show as we are!

I’m loving Greek – one of the only shows that my sister and I sit down and have to watch together, so I’m very excited to have it back!
That’s awesome.  I’m glad to hear that.  I love hearing that, it’s so cool!

You’ve gotten to play Casey for a while now; what are some of your favorite things about her?
I love that she’s a good person who is always messing up, and trying to do the right thing, and it always turns out wrong.  I love that she’s always like confused about who she is, or who she wants to be, or the right guy for her.  But she’s always, like, on that path.  Always struggling to figure it out.  I love that about her. SyFy is coming – Dave Howe wants you to know it’s a good thing!

syfyI had the chance to sit in on a conference call with Dave Howe from Sci Fi, or rather SyFy, who let us in on the little secrets about why the change, where the idea came from, and all of the other questions you might have about their re-branding!

Hello. It’s Dave Howe here and I think we should have quite a lot of the SciFi Digital Network which is great. I just want to kind of kick off by, you know, thanking you all for joining this conference call and obviously to say to you that, you know, no holds barred here.  We want to be as open and honest and, you know, have, you know, a good conversation about where we are so that you can ask me, you know, the points that you’ve heard from the people that respond to your sites and I can kind of respond on our behalf. So fire away. Read the rest of this entry »
