My favorite show this week, SONS OF ANARCHY Season Finale

Welcome to a week in review. Thankfully, it was a rather slow week, with a lot of big shows going into repeats, so I really had time to focus on some quality TV!  It’s a long read, so take caution as you  jump in, and be careful of spoilers if you haven’t seen something this week!

SUNDAY, November 29

THE AMAZING RACE is really starting to pick up steam as it heads towards the end.  At this point, I would be surprised if Meghan and Cheyne didn’t win in the finale, but the luck that Brian and Ericka have had and Sam and Dan’s ability to stay right in the raace could be total upsets.  It’s a shame that the Globetrotters took the 4 hour penalty in last week’s episode.  There are only so many combinations of the letters Z, R, N, A, and F, especially knowing that it started with an F, thanks to the brother’s help.  I would never have taken the 4 hour penalty, no matter how frustrating it was!  Maybe if I was actually in the race, and under the pressure, I would change my mind, but I doubt it!  Anyway, at this point, I don’t mind seeing any of the top three folks take the prize!

Talk about about ramping up to an amazing finale – DEXTER Season 4 has been completely on fire, am I right?  So many twists and turns.  With Dex figuring out the latest twist in Arthur’s seriously effed up world, that he kills 10 year old boys first, and then finishes the cycle.  Creepier than creepy, if you ask me.  And then there’s Christine.  I have to admit, I started thinking she was up to no good right around the time she stole information from Quinn, but I never would have guessed that she had shot Deb, never! Speaking of Quinn – I am suddenly shipping Deb/Quinn and I hope that that doesn’t mean we’ll see the end of Harrington’s Quinn in the finale!  I’m so over the whole Rita thing.  SO over it.  Part of me really thinks that Arthur will kill Dex’s family, giving him something to do in Season 5, get revenge, or go off the deep end or something genius like that.  According to an interview with Jennifer Carpenter on E!, the finale will have us asking “What can’t they do next” instead of “What can they possibly do next” so that should be insane.  Cannot wait to see what happens next!

Is CALIFORNICATION becoming the most depressing show on the planet?  I think it is, but for some reason, this season is my favorite.  Hank Moody is the most dysfunctional person in the world, yet women throw themselves at him.  I’m over Kathleen Turner, I’m over Rick Springfield, and I’m interested to see what happens with Hank and Karen.  I’ve heard from some friends that the finale is depressing, but that’s just par for the course, so we’ll see what happens in the next 2 eps! Tonight is the big premiere day of USA’s fantastic detective series – MONK and PSYCH.

MONKUp first on the 8th and final premiere of MONK, Elizabeth Perkins, from WEEDS, stars as Mr. Monk’s favorite child star all-grown-up as a boozy kind of whore in “Mr. Monk’s Favorite Show.”  He is eventually hired to be her bodyguard and slowly comes to realize that she’s not the naive little girl she used to be.  Over the years, Monk has slowly gone from ex-cop with a few small issues that were made worse after the murder of his wife to a man with so many idiosynchrisies and difficulty is so many situations that it’s a bit unbelievable.  That’s not to say that the premiere isn’t fun, because it is.  It’s nice to see Tony Shalhoub in an afro, “fitting in” with the family on his favorite Brady-Bunch-type show.  Natalie and Monk have gotten so much closer over her seasons with the series, that I’ll be sad to see that go.  I just hope that Randy (who gets dumber and dumber each year) gets a good pay off.  Look for some awesome guest stars this season – after Perkins and Rena Sofer in the premiere, Monk gets visits from Bitty Schram, Erik “Freaking” Balfour, Reed Diamond, Kelly Carlson, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (LOST’s Mr Eko), Jay Mohr, Meat Loaf, and plenty of others!  The series finale of MONK airs December 4, 2009, so  enjoy it while you can!

PSYCH2After the opener of MONK comes the brilliant premiere of PSYCH’s 4th Season “Extradition: British Columbia.”  After Shawn and Gus escape for some downtime on their oddly romantic vacation in Whistler, they run across Despereux, the dodgy art thief that Lassiter has been tracking forever.  Played with glee by Cary Elwes (THE PRINCESS BRIDE!), he proves a great adversary for Shawn.  What I loved most about this episode (and it’s hard to pick a favorite) is that the writers and cast and crew did the best they could with their surroundings – you can only convince the audience that Vancouver is Santa Barbara for so long before you need to do something.  So taking a break, and actually showing Vancouver for what it truly is, it was a nice break!  The emotional ramifications from the season finale (which found Shawn choosing a relationship with Abigail – Rachael Leigh Cook, who returns this season – over pursuing something with Juliet) will bleed through the season and it’s nice to see these characters start to really investigate the emotional side of their characters.  I can’t wait to see more episodes this year – I’ve already watched the premiere 4 times, and will watch again tonight!
After you tune in tonight, let us know what you think!

MONK has a(nother) brother!

monk-6MONK’s 7th season continues tonight on USA and it’s another solid episode with a crazy murder scheme, MONK’s insane ability to have an a-ha moment in the middle of it all.  Oh, and did I mention that his other brother, Jack (Jack Monk, Jr, Adrian’s half brother) is played by Steve Zahn?

I’m always interested when this show explores Adrian’s family dynamic.  He is so damaged, most of it having to do with his upbringing and his family, so when we get to see him confronted with the fact that his dad did the same thing to another whole family, it’s intriguing.

Couple things –

  • Natalie needs to stop calling Monk “Mr. Monk”.  It’s been what, 3 years now?  Sharona always called him Adrian…
  • Randy Disher is just the dumbest human being alive – if he’s SFPD’s like second in command?  I’d be worried to be a San Fran citizen.
  • Steve Zahn is fantastic.  His idiosyncrasies in this episode are hilarious – I hope we see him come back before MONK takes its final bow!

Follow the jump for some pics from tonight’s episode! (more…)

Remind me never to go away for two weeks and leave my poor little TiVo to do all the work for me!  I am sad to say that I am still not caught up on the TV I missed while I was gallivanting in San Diego and dogsitting for friends in the woods of Southest PA!

Here is what I’m catching up on this weekend:

I love THE CLOSER on TNT.  It’s one of the smartest dramas I’ve ever seen.  Kyra Sedgwick is fantastic and the rest of the team all bring so much to the table.  I love Flynn and Provenza.  I am so far behind on what could have possibly happened between Daniels and Gabriel.  I love the idea that Brenda and Fritz had a huge blow up fight (I know this thanks to previews).  But I have quite a few episodes that I need to sit down and take care of or my TiVo is going to stop recording!

I am also a huge fan of SAVING GRACE.  I didn’t watch the first season, but I tuned into the season premiere and LOVED it.  But that’s the only episode I’ve been able to watch this season!  What is up with Ham and Grace?  Has Earl come back and forgiven Grace for whatever happened with Father Satan?  How did Grace’s nephew handle being a junior explorer or whatever?  There are so many questions and I just can’t answer them yet!

The team from Sterling Cooper probably misses me!  I was able to watch the first episode of MAD MEN’s Season 2, but haven’t caught last week’s second episode.  I am so intrigued by everything show has to offer.  The attitudes, the interactions, the blatant sexism.  It’s fascinating.  And Jon Hamm is like #4 on my “leave your significant other and marry me” list.  I love being taken away into a whole other world for an hour, and this show does that!

Chicago was amazing.  I had a great trip, and really enjoyed the USA Upfronts!

Maria from the WWE was so great – really sweet, really down to earth.  Gorgeous, and just a really nice person who wants to some day make it in the movies or on TV as an actress.  She has a presence about her – very awesome.

Corbin Bernson – I am seriously rocking a huge crush on Corbin.  He was so great, with that gravelly voice, and looking all hot for a 50-something man.  He smelled good too ha!  He was charming, and had great stories to tell about why he likes working and how he picks interesting roles.  He also doesn’t know who will be playing Shawn’s dad on Psych, but he has heard the same rumors we all have.

Tony Shalhoub – where do I even begin?  He was funny, and sweet, and down to earth, and soft spoken, and charming, and shorter than I expected, and just really great.  He told me a story about menus at restaurants and his OCD worries about them.  He loved that my dad calls me Monk.  It was very awesome to stand there with my cocktail in hand while Tony had his cocktail in hand like we were just shooting the shit at a party.  Just fabulous.

Shocker of all shockers, my favorite person of the night was Gabrielle Anwar from Burn Notice.  It’s not a big shock because I generally love her and her characters, but she was absolutely hilarious and I did not expect that!  She was self-deprecating and charming, and bubbly, and happy to be there.  I just enjoyed every minute we spent with her!  The best part?  She said that Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken was one of the most fun shoots she’s ever been on, and that’s like one of my favorite movies!  Amazing!

I’m not happy to be home, but I’ll just count down the days until Miami and Vancouver and San Diego!
